The Association of Students with Disabilities (ASD) “GAUDEAMUS” promotes the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

On 13 December 2006, in New York, the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the rights of Persons with Disabilities. As of 30 March 2007 the Convention is open for signature by UN member States.

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is an international convention which contains 50 articles stipulating the rights of the disabled as members of society with equal rights. The Association of Students with Disabilities "GAUDEAMUS" has been actively involved in preparing the Convention.

The Association of Students with Disabilities ”GAUDEAMUS” from Moldova has been continuously promoting the signature and further ratification of the Convention by our country. This would be one of the steps Moldova is taking in view of integration into the European Union.

The Round Table “UN Convention on the Rights of the Disabled People – a Solution for Improvement” represents an effort in view of promoting the rights of the disabled. It is generally acknowledged that the rights of the disabled are still infringed upon and are not respected.

The Association of the Students with Disabilities ”GAUDEAMUS” is a non-governmental organization, which has the mission to integrate the young disabled people into society by promoting their rights, in particular the right to education.

“Information for education” – this is the principle guiding the activity of the organization, which applies European practices in bringing up members of a democratic society.

The Association ”GAUDEAMUS” has become a founding member of the Network of the Young People and Students with Disabilities from South – Eastern Europe in 2003. The Association started its activity in 2000 and comprises over 400 members.

The event will take place on 19 April 2007 in the Conference Hall of Hotel CODRU, starting at 9.30, and is organized by ASD ”GAUDEAMUS” in partnership with the OSCE Mission to Moldova and the Delegation of the European Commission to Moldova.
